This bridge was built in 1861. The carved gates have made it Trondheim's distinctive hallmark.
A sentry and excise house stood at either end of the bridge. The excise house on the west side is still standing and is now used as a day-care centre. The bridge and gates you see here were built by Carl Adolf Dahl, the executive municipal engineer in charge of public buildings and works in the last half of the 19th century. The wooden gate on the west side of the bridge is known as the Gate of Fortune.
The Old Town Bridge crosses the Nidelva river and leads into Bakklandet.

fantastic work here. great colors and treatment
ReplyDeleteGate of fortune.
ReplyDeleteLeading over to the area of Ola Uteligger or what Vømmøls used to call him. Need to go to Trondheim soon again. Beautiful citY.
Very, very picturesque - I love the shots! The gates have an almost oriental look about them.
ReplyDeleteNot sure the white glow shows up on all monitors but it appears that you have cranked up the colors and sharpening a lot or at the limits. It makes the colors and details pop but at the expense of the white glow around the edges. Or at least it does on the three monitors I have. Samsung, Mac, and HP.
ReplyDeleteThe photographs are strikingly beautiful regardless of the white glow on my monitors.
Norway's largest, little bridge - well known, well maintained (and documented!) and a pride to the city.
this is beautiful - what a colourful neighbourhood - those buildings all look like doll's houses!
ReplyDeleteI think all of these are wonderful...I love that bridge. I love all the shots, but I think the second from the last is my favorite.
ReplyDeleteAs for the white, I don't have any glow at all, it is just white. Everything looks normal.
What vibrant colors. Reminds me of a town I visited in Nova Scotia, but it was too long ago and I cant remember the name of the town.

ReplyDeleteFantastic photos. Your town is very colorful.
The gate of the bridge had almost chinese feeling. Fallen leafs and colours were really beautiful.
ReplyDeleteIvar: What a neat bridge and points to good constuction when it is standing for this long. The other thing is the weather it has to endure.
Går litt i surr....
ReplyDeleteWonderful colors.
ReplyDeleteThe photos i like more are the third and the fourth. They seem more expressive.
Congratlations.
Marvellous to see these autumn pictures of the Gamle Bybro - happy memories it brings.
ReplyDeleteOh so beautiful,
