Saltstraumen

Here I am standing at Saltstraumen just outside the city of Bodø. I am told that this is the worlds strongest tidal current with up to 400 million m³ of seawater forcing its way through a 3 km long strait every 6th hour. Vortices up to 10 m in diameter and 5 m in depth can be formed, whirlpool.
Saltstraumen is a popular place for fishing, due to abundance of saithe/pollock, cod, wolffish and halibut. Coalfish is the speciality for this area, the largest documented caught on a fishing rod is 22,7 kg.
This bridge is 768 meters long, the longest span is 160 meters and the maximum clearance to the tidal current is 41 meters.

If you take a close look you will see a "spot" in the sky above the bridge. That is not a dead insect on my lens, but a Sea King mk 43 Helicopter.

Smoke on the water

The cold winter is here with temperatures between -15 to -40 degrees celsius in my area. The frost mist is covering most of the fjord and that is a pretty sight actually.

There is no color editing in this picture. This is the color that my eyes captured as well.

If you mount your camera on a tripod and set your shutterspeed to more than 30 sec (bulb) and point your lens up to the sky you get this effect. It seem like the stars are moving.. surprise.. it is not. It is of course the rotation of our planet. I used shutterspeed 2837 sec on the first one and 1538 on the last one. That equals 47 minutes and 25 minutes. Be sure to have enough battery power :-)

This looks like a plane from Qatar Airways. It is crossing middle of Norway heading west-north west. To where I don´t know, I didn´t get the opportunity to ask.

Here I am at mount Dovrefjell back in April this year. On a bright and sunny day with clear blue sky. This was a perfect day for me and the memories are glued to my brain. For an amateur like me to see and to photograph these great animals is just spectacular.

This is the sunset on Andøya, an island in northern Norway, captured exactly at 00:00 26th of july this year. A wonderful and memorable night. It was an excellent night for staying up late and to fall a sleep in a tent. This place is glued to my mind.

SkyWatch Friday

I went on a trip today, to Bymarka, Trondheims recreation area nr 1. I had a day off from work and the weather was just excellent. I took my gear with me and went out to the "peak" you see in the background, called Storheia, 565 meters above sea level. Since it it thursday and many people are still at work I was almost alone and that is great. Just to feel the silence, only the sounds from nature. Birds and the wind. Often there is an overwhelming silence, you stop to listen and there is nothing to listen to. Just quiet. Nice!

This is from the ruins of the church of Tautra monastery, founded by monks in 1207. The monastery at Tautra was wealthy and powerful in the Middle Ages and its abbots often played a major part in Norwegian politics. Tautra abby was dissolved during the Reformation in 1537.

There is a new abby at Taura to day, founded in 1999. It has more modern buildings of course.

My summer vacation is soon over and I have had 4 wonderful weeks. Great weather all the time.
This shot is from last week. Captured at 10:51 PM on 4th of July. At my place we don´t see the midnight sun but it never gets dark anyway. For me it is something special to sit up all night with family and friends, enjoying summer and spending time with each other.
